We use our own raw materials whenever possible to be able to control the whole production chain of our substrates from the raw material to the finely tuned ready-to-use substrates. That’s how we guarantee the safe and reliable Kekkilä Professional quality our name is known for.
‘In addition to the quality assurance and control we conduct ourselves, we send frequent samples to external laboratories. Our professionals ensure the quality of our products during harvesting, upon arrival, during storage, in the premixing phase and factory production with various external and internal chemical and physical analysis. After testing, analysing and screening only the best peat is selected to be processed into our products.
Responsibly harvested peat
Kekkilä peat is harvested only from carefully selected sites where specific extraction permits have been obtained from the local government. These areas are selected, in part, because they have no conservation value. We are not harvesting peat from protected areas.
The most regulated companies are those that have an impact on peatlands. From the initiative, it takes several years until all permissions are granted and extraction of peat can start. This includes assessing the site for its conservation values as well as making specific plans to ensure that the bog can be regenerated, when the peat extraction is finished.
After-use of peatlands
We share this planet together. It is our greatest resource and most valuable treasure. Our future and success depends on the well-being of the environment where we work and which surrounds us.
That’s why we value peatland restoration and make sure that life continues in the bogs long after we’ve left them. Often as more rich than before we came. Restoration of the production area makes it a coal-binding ecosystem again. In many cases, the restored areas have even higher biodiversity than before peat production.
In summer 2015 Kekkilä was awarded the Environment Act of the Year by The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (FANC) for the bird wetland and bird watching area built to continue life in the bog at a decommissioned peat production area in Sammalistonsuo wetland. The restoration project was planned in close cooperation with local stakeholders such as the local Ornithological Association, Finnish Hunters’ Association, local officials and FANC. Bird enthusiasts have praised the hill for its convenience and suitability for all ages.
